International Humanitarian Law for Academicians

IHL for Academicians is designed for the university and military academics in Malaysia. During the seminar, participants will have the opportunity to discuss on the challenges of IHL while addressing the needs for IHL discourse from the academic and military perspective. Participants are highly encouraged to share their knowledge and experiences in relation to the topics under discussion. There will be presentations, discussions, case studies, role play exercises, panel discussions and video shows during the seminar. Facilitators and presenters for this seminar are coming from the military, universities as well as the ICRC. The session will be conducted in English. A reasonable level of proficiency in English is therefore a prerequisite. A comprehensive reading materials will be provided to the participants prior to the course and afterwards.
The seminar is open to academics and teachers of international law, political science, international relations, human rights, defence studies, strategic studies, or any other related discipline.
The seminar will cover the following areas, among others:
- Overview of international humanitarian law (IHL);
- The relationship between IHL, international human rights law, and public international law;
- IHL from the military perspective;
- Contemporary issues and challenges to IHL.
The seminar is intended to improve and strengthen knowledge of the law applicable to armed conflicts and other situations of violence as well as to promote its understanding from the academics and military perspective. It is crafted to enhance the expertise of the academics by addressing the current debates and challenges on IHL in addition to facilitate the promotion and teaching on IHL.
